Two Belgian Churches For Eva

This one's in Bruges. I remember thinking at the time that the tower at the top wasn't exactly perpendicular - it seemed to be sloping slightly. Then I thought it was just me - stoned again.

A couple of days later I was talking to a guy in Antwerp about Bruges and he said " Did you notice that the tower on top of the Church is sloping slightly ?"

This is St. Nicholas in the "Old Town" area of Brussels near the Grand Place (or market square).
Unusual for a Dutch/Belgian Church - it looks very English or possibly German. I should have asked questions : I should also have photographed the interior which is gorgeous.

I don't have time to research St Nicholas but wasn't it the church that was built around some stream that ran through the city hence it's strange shape?

Gorgeous churches!

I don't know about streams ( I'll research it when I've got a minute) but one of the old markets is an integral part of the building.

It's very close to " La Bourse" - a translation of that might provide a clue as well.

Did the research...I was right. Isn't it strange the tidbits one remembers?

Here is the passage I found:

"In the Boterstraat / Rue au Beurre, close to the Market Place, is one of the oldest churches of Brussels, the Saint Nicholas Church. The church was named after Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of the traders, which was not surprising because the trade center, the market, was just around the corner. The church was built in an asymmetrical way because in the earlier days an irregular and small brook used to run through this street."

Wow! After seeing these photos (and your blog), I already caught the travel bug. ( * sigh *) I will be often, if not just to daydream. ( * sigh *)

Maybe one day I'll be able to tour out there. In the meantime, I need to work on my set.
