I was sitting in the Hollywood Hawaiian Hotel
I was staring in my empty coffee cup
I was thinking that the gypsy wasn't lyin'
All the salty margaritas in Los Angeles
I'm gonna drink 'em up
And if California slides into the ocean
Like the mystics and statistics say it will
I predict this motel will be standing until I pay my bill
Don't the sun look angry through the trees
Don't the trees look like crucified thieves
Don't you feel like Desperados under the eaves
Heaven help the one who leaves
Still waking up in the mornings with shaking hands
And I'm trying to find a girl who understands me
But except in dreams you're never really free
Don't the sun look angry at me
I was sitting in the Hollywood Hawaiian Hotel
I was listening to the air conditioner hum
It went mmmmmm..
........................... Look away..........................................
(Look away down Gower Avenue, Look away....)
PS There is a "star prize" for anyone who can correctly identify the city in this photo.

I have no idea where the city is, but those street lights are enchanting. The architecture of the streets you post is amazing.
Love the pic. If it weren't for the cars, it mimics New Orleans Bourbon Street.
Love the song too....Desperados Under the Eaves by Warren Zevon...it was on his debut album.
Guessing on the street would be somewhere in Amsterdam?
Eva,
I love architecture ; I see buildings and I just think "Wow......photo".
To put this into context it's 4:00 in the morning and just out of camera shot (to the right) is a group of strippers one of whom took the picture.
And not Amsterdam Steamy .....but you're in the right sort of ball-park. Europe for sure.

PS In case you're wondering Shmoop first saw this photo about a year ago and suggested the title.
kobenhavn/copenhagen
Thanks, Merlin! I love that song. And you really can't appreciate it unless you hear it. It really captures a moment in time for just about anybody who's experienced life. ::meaning all of us::
I love that "mmmmmhmmm" that he does at the end.
I have NO clue but those sure are some puhrty lights! :-P
Merlin, have you looked at this on other than a standard 800x600, 1024x768, etc.? I'm looking at your blog on a dell wide screen (I hate the dell), and everything in the right side bar is overlaid on the blog posts.
VS,
Copenhagen is correct. You win the star prize. What would you like?
And no - I havn't seen this on a large monitor because I don't have one.
Shmoop,
Yep - it has a special meaning for me too but it's that line about California that really cracks me up every time !
Mailyn,
At least I get around to posting photos - not like some people I could mention.
M.
LMAO!!!! I know, I know. I NEED to do that. Gawd I am so lazy! But the good news is that I still have my red hair so yeah, any day now I'll remember to post it. I just forget every time I am away from the computer! I'm a senile old lady. :-P
When you're as old as me it's time to start worrying.
I can only remember where I live about twice a week.
M.
......and isn't it about 4:00 in the morning over there at the moment ?
Ha, been in Copenhagen, but I don’t think I saw that spot… go figure!
I've never been in Copenhagen, haven't seen much in the way of pictures of it. I just opened the full sized version of the pic and looked for identifiers. Maxim Bar has 3 locations (you naughty naughty boy), and their all in copenhagen.
I'd never have guessed Copenhagen.
I wasn't even thinking Europe.
crashdummie,
Just around the corner from the train station opposite the Scandic Webers Hoteland about 400 metres ftom Tivoli.
VS,
I knew there had to be a clue there.
I wouldn't have guessed that all of Maxims were in Copenhagen
Incidentally I wasn't in the club : I was just talking to the girls who were outside having a smoke and trying to drum up some business (no doubt).
M.
I would have guessed New Orleans. I've never been to either of them and it shows.
But one day...
The last lines of the poem are especially telling of the mood: constant droning noise, and views in every direction tha go on and on, but after a while, you've seen it all. Just like California.
You crack me up! Twice a week? Is that because of the age or the drunken stupor you might be in? :-P
Oh and I thought you knew, on top of everything else I am an insomniac as well. But I love it. Much better than being a day person. Vampires and all. LOL.
Eric,
I've always had a fancy for New Orleans too but I'm told that now isn't a good time.
Never really fancied California at all ; I think the East Coast of the States is more my style.
Mailyn,
I'm a part-time vampire (weekends only). During the week, when I'm working, I like my sleep but over the weekends ....... I'm still up when it gets light sometimes.
It's certainly not a druken stupor : I didn't drink at all for 7 years - not a single drop. Now I have the occasional Guinness as a treat for being good.
M.
Ah, a word from the Universal Language . . .
BAR
I see that Scandanavians are no different from the rest of us.
Shmoop,
Wrong. Scandanavians are very different from the rest of us.
They eat herrings at every available opportunity and take their clothes off with no excuse at all.
They also charge excessive amounts for beer and drive very expensive cars called Saabs.
And as if that isn't bad enough when they've finished having a bath they go outside and roll around in the snow.
(Thinks : I bet that's annoyed them).
M.
"They eat herrings at every available opportunity and take their clothes off with no excuse at all."
Sounds like my mom's side of the family (which is Lithuanian which is closer to Finnish than any other Eastern European country. People seem to always mistake Lithuania for a Slavak country.)
So I guess I should amend my statement to say that:
Scandanavians are like my whacked out family.
